Video has surfaced of Wolfgang Van Halen performs Van Halen‘s classicPanama“at the Los Angeles tribute to the late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins this week.

With the lively, respectful performance, Wolfgang, the 31-year-old son of the late Van Halen guitarist Eddie Van Halenactually also paid tribute to his father.

After earlier said he would never play the songWolf was joined on stage at the Kia Forum on Tuesday (September 27) by the Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, The darkness singer Justin Hawkins (no relation to Taylor) and drummer Josh Freese to carry out 1984 here.

Last year, Wolf pushed back at social media commentators who suggested he perform “Panama” with his own band, Mammoth WVH. “I honor my father by existing and doing what I do every day,” he answered. “I’m not fucking playing Panama for you guys.”

But the second tribute to Taylor apparently helped Wolf change his mind. The exact cause of Taylor’s death is still unknown after he died in Bogota, Colombia on March 25 before the Foos were due to play Festival Stereo Picnic. ONE preliminary toxicology report showed up a day later. Eddie Van Halen died in 2020 after a battle with cancer.

The planning of a similar official Eddie Van Halen tribute show was mentioned by ex Metallica bassist Jason Newsted in an interview earlier this year. Newsted suggested it was to show him and the guitarist Joe Satriani together with Alex Van HalenVan Halen’s surviving drummer and Eddie’s brother.

Not mentioned was Wolfgang. After replaces bassist Michael Anthony in Van Halen in 2006, Wolf played in the band until Eddie’s death in 2020. Wolf appeared with Mammoth WVH the next year.

On Wednesday (Sept. 28), Wolf joked about playing “Panama” after his earlier refusal. Weeks ago, fellow Van Halen alum David Lee Roth parts a previously unreleased version of “Panama”.
