Who Is Sam Ryder, Taylor Hawkins Tribute Singer Who Sung Queen’s ‘Somebody to Love’?

Yesterday (September 3rd) was the first of two long awaited Taylor Hawkins Tribute concerts were held at Wembley Stadium, giving the late drummer’s friends, family and fans a very exciting and emotional event (to say the least). While many famous artists took partvocalist Sam Ryder – who joined Foo Fightersguitarist Brian Maydrummer Roger Taylor and Hawkins’ son, Rufus Taylor, for an excellent version of Queen’s “Somebody to Love” — are probably less well known.

Born in Essex, England in June 1989, Ryder became interested in a career in music when he saw Total 41 in concert as a youth. Along the way, he discovered Iron Maiden (specifically, Seventh son of a seventh son), Freddie Mercury, Lordi and of course Eurovision as well.

During the 2010s he played, toured and/or recorded with a few rock bands (such as The Morning After, Blessed by a broken heart and close your eyes), while working in construction with his father.

Blessed by a Broken Heart, “Out of Control”

However, it wasn’t until Ryder started covering music on TikTok around March 2020 that he really took off. He actually became one the most followed British artist on the platform, leading to him releasing his debut EP – 2021’s The sun will rise – on Parlophone Records and become the British representative of Eurovision Song Contest 2022 (featuring “Space Man”).

He ended up finished in second place (under Ukraine’s Kalush Orchestra) and continues its meteoric rise. For example, “Space Man” hit #2 UK Singles Chart in May, which helped him land opportunities such as a show on the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, an appearance on British reality series Celebrity Gogglebox and several live summer residencies throughout the United States and South Korea.

More or less, that brings us to last night’s performance of “Somebody to Love.”

Naturally, Grohl introduced Ryder with his usual humility and passion:

We have a very special guest tonight that you might not expect. We didn’t. When we were talking about the next song to perform we weren’t actually sure who we were going to get to come up and sing it with us and I think it might have been Roger [Taylor] who had this idea. Roger showed us a clip of someone singing along to this song and we made a phone call and within 20 minutes this person told us he wanted to come here tonight to sing it with us. Then would you please welcome the most amazing vocalist. Sam Ryder, come up to sing with us tonight.

You can watch a clip (provided by Rock sound) of Grohl’s intro as well as their version of “Somebody to Love” below:

If you’re as impressed with Ryder’s singing as we are, you’ll want to keep an eye out for his debut LP, There’s nothing but room, man!when it arrives in October.
