TI auditioned for Nick Cannon’s role in ‘Drumline’

YOU made his film debut in the 2006s THAT YOUbut apparently he tried Nick Cannons leading role in Drumline years earlier.

Monday (Jan. 23) during a conversation at Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay podcast about his successful film career, which includes roles in American gangsteraforementioned THAT YOU, Takers and more, Tip revealed Drumline could possibly have been in his filmography if he had known how to play drums.

“Coming up through the ranks in Atlanta would put me in the company of all the legends in the city,” TI said. “And I couldn’t meet all the legends without connecting with Dallas Austin. And Dallas Austin was a huge, huge, huge producer-songwriter. Just an incredible talent and an incredible mogul.

“And he started filming and he had this one movie,” he continued. “I was working on my first album, he was telling me about his first movie, and you know, I was always like, ‘Yo bruh, put me in it’. And he was like, ‘Ok, yeah man! Say less.’ And he sent me to go read, and I read, and they said, ‘Man, you gotta learn to play the drums.’ And I thought, ‘I could play like I could play drums.’ They were like, ‘Nah, you have to learn how.’ I was like, “Mann, I don’t want to do that.”

“I just didn’t want to commit to it at the time. It wasn’t there. But I read and I didn’t get it, and that movie kept being Drumline. Yes, I read for Nick Cannon’s part. But see, it opened the door for me to do THAT YOU! After I didn’t get the role Drumline, I went back to Dallas and said, ‘Man next time, just give me the role. I’m not going to read or anything! Just give me the role.’ And he was like ‘Cool’ and he just gave in the role of Rashad THAT YOU.”

Tip added that he and Nick often joke about the scenario, but that he’s ultimately happy with how it all turned out.

“A lot of times, Nick Cannon and I, we go back and forth and we get on each other,” Tip said. “I was like, ‘Yeah man, you took my role’. And he’s like, ‘Yeah, but I traded you for your role.’ I said, ‘You couldn’t have done my part!’ And we just have that kind of relationship. So I’m happy! You know, all things happen for a reason. What God has for you, no one can take away from you.”

The 2002s Drumline would go on to become a success at the box office, earning over $56 million in the United States and just over a million in foreign markets.

While Nick Cannon previously appeared in two other films, i.a Men in Black II, Drum line was his first leading role.

Elsewhere on Club Shay Shay, Tip recalled the time he got a pep talk from the legendary Denzel Washington on the set of the rapper’s second film, American gangster.

“While we’re rehearsing, I’m going back and forth, back and forth,” he explained. And he said, ‘What’s going on, n-gga? Are you nervous?’ I’m like, ‘Man, I’m just making sure I don’t mess it up.’

“He said, ‘Here man, listen. They could have had somebody in here to do what you’re doing right now. They could have had anybody in the world, they could have called anybody right here to do it, you make.'”

He continued: “I said, ‘Yes, yes’. He said, ‘They called you for a reason, didn’t they?’ I said yes.’ He said, ‘Do you know what that reason is?’ I started thinking and I said, ‘Yes, I do.’ He said, ‘Okay then, do it and you don’t have to be nervous’.”
