TI Cancels Denzel Washington Pep Talk for ‘American Gangster’

YOU has remembered the time he received a pep talk from Denzel Washington on the set of American gangster.

The Atlanta rapper starred as Stevie Lucas, the son of a fellow rapper/actor ordinarys character, in Ridley Scott’s star-studded, Oscar-nominated 2007 film.

As one of his earliest film appearances, TI was understandably nervous while shooting the film, but he was able to get some much-needed advice from Washington (who played notorious Harlem drug lord Frank Lucas) as he prepared for a scene together.

During a performance at Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay podcast, Tip revealed what the Oscar-winning actor said to him after he saw him looking nervous before the scene.

“While we’re rehearsing, I’m going back and forth, back and forth,” he explained. And he said, ‘What’s going on, n-gga? Are you nervous?’ I’m like, ‘Man, I’m just making sure I don’t mess it up.’

“He said, ‘Here man, listen. They could have had somebody in here to do what you’re doing right now. They could have had anybody in the world, they could have called anybody right here to do it, you make.'”

He continued: “I said, ‘Yes, yes’. He said, ‘They called you for a reason, didn’t they?’ I said yes.’ He said, ‘Do you know what that reason is?’ I started thinking and I said, ‘Yes, I do.’ He said, ‘Okay then, do it and you don’t have to be nervous.’

talking about American gangster back in 2007, TI compared the film to an all-star Hip Hop collaboration.

“It’s a phenomenal film,” he said MTV. “It’s one of the most prolific black gangster pictures to ever hit the screen. A tremendous amount of acting. Everyone goes hard.

TI Joins ‘Power’ Star Joseph Sikora in New Horror Film ‘Fear’

“It’s like when a Hip Hop fan hears a song like [DJ Khaled‘s] ‘We Takin’ Over’ and you hear all your favorites and you hear them at their best.”

“That’s what ‘American Gangster’ is for movies. Cuba Gooding Jr., Common, RZA, Russell Crowe, Idris Elba. Everybody’s doing their thing, everybody’s going hard.

As for starring opposite Common, he said, “We had a lot of monologues. They fixed him up with a beard and gray hair. We were just happy to portray our characters in this story. It wasn’t about him playing my father, or that I played his son, it was about being a part of this film and going the extra mile.”

TI has most recently starred in the films Monster hunter and Cut Throat Cityboth of which were released in 2020.
