The Weeknd has released the visuals for his Avatar: The Way of Water soundtrack cut “Nothing Is Lost (You Give Me Strength)” – and it’s perfectly on theme.
Viewers visit a world that looks like Avatar‘s Pandora in the Quentin Deronzier-directed video, in which the superstar singer makes a brief appearance. The song was co-produced by Swedish House Mafia.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter earlier this month, The Weeknd discussed his engagement with Avatar franchise and said the first film helped pull him out of a dark time in his life when it came out in 2009.
“It was probably the darkest time of my life,” he said. “I was homeless, pretty much. I had dropped out of school. I didn’t know if I was going to be successful as a musician. I didn’t know if I was going to be able to live to see tomorrow.
“And I remember somehow I got to see the movie in the theater. I don’t know how I got in. It was such an escape from my real life that the movie is tattooed on my brain.”
Unsurprisingly, it felt like a full circle moment for him to be able to contribute to the sequel.
“They told me they had one name on the list to do the song and it was me,” The Weeknd said. “It feels surreal and it’s a full-circle moment for me to be a part of something like this because it’s such an important film to me.”
“Nothing Is Lost (You Give Me Strength)” appears in last trailer of Avatar: The Way of Waterwhere the full number arrives the day before the film hits theaters.
In related news, The Weeknd broke the all-time record for most monthly global listeners among any artist in Spotify history earlier this month.
With 94.734 million monthly listeners, The Weeknd overtakes Ed Sheeran, who previously held the record with 82.40 million. Other names in the top five include Justin Bieber (81.43m), Taylor Swift (81.21m) and Ariana Grande (77.18m).
