Red Hot Chili Peppers Debut Chill New Eddie Van Halen Tribute Song

“Eddie” is the latest song from the upcoming Red Hot Chili Peppers album The return of the dream canteentheir second full-length in 2022, and it’s a tribute to the late legend Eddie Van Halen.

“Sometimes we don’t realize how deeply influenced and connected we are to artists until the day they die. Eddie Van Halen was one of a kind,” says the singer Anthony Kiedis.

Describing how the song came together, he continues, “The day after he died Flea come to practice with an emotional bass line. John [Frusciante], Chad [Smith] and I began to play along, and pretty soon from all our hearts a song in his honor unfolded without difficulty. It felt good to be sad and love so much for someone who had given so much to our lives. Although the song doesn’t address Eddie by name, it does speak of his early days on the Sunset Strip and the rock ‘n’ roll wallpaper that Van Halen painted on our minds. Ultimately, our song asks that you remember Eddie not for dying, but for living his wildest dream.”

The track touches on other elements of Eddie Van Halen’s life and career – his birthplace in Amsterdam, his first wife Valerie Bertinelli, the song “Hot For Teacher”, singer David Lee Roth and more.

Although the late guitarist was known for his remarkable displays of speed, dexterity and melodic hooks, this Chili Peppers track doesn’t quite indulge in the signature aspects of Van Halen’s guitar playing and is instead a relaxed offering that ends with a bit of a riotous (though not shred-tastic) guitar solo.

Red Hot Chili Peppers, “Eddie” Lyrics (via Genius)

When I sail the Sunset Strip, I’m a bit of a king
Grandma wanted to go for a ride, I’ve bent the strings
I have hammers in both my hands, such a delicate touch
They say I’m from Amsterdam, does that make me Dutch?

Don’t remember me for what I did last night, oh
Please don’t remember me
Lord and children
Don’t remind me, it’s only 1980
It’s only 1983

Smokes the cooler, feels my own light
My brother is a keeper, I married a TV wife
Devil’s Camaro, parked at the high school
A little sombrero because the teacher was way too hot

Don’t remember me for what I did last night, oh
Please don’t remember me
Listen sir now
Don’t remind me, it’s only 1980
It’s only 1983

Tell My Love “But Never Leave Me”
You can’t complain about the weather
Snowing at the rainbow, have a ball
Cut my teeth on the whiskey
GTO has tried to kiss me
One more song, they’ve seen it all

Don’t remember me for what I did last night, oh
Please don’t remember me
What did I say Lord?
Don’t remind me, it’s only 1980
It’s only 1983
Don’t remember me for what I did to David
You know I’m talking about David Lee
am i ready
Don’t remember me for what I did last night, oh
I guess I played a Flying V
