Why Queen’s Brian May says recent knighthood ‘comes with a bit more clout’

Queen‘s ruling axeman – Brian May – have achieved a lot, and yesterday (December 30) he was given the title of Sir in the UK’s annual New Year’s Honors List. According to him, the designation comes with “a little bit more punch.”

As mentioned on the band’s official siteMay’s “quote recognizes [him] as Dr. Brian Harold May CBE” and recognizes his many contributions to music, astrophysics, animal welfare and charity over the past few decades. Specifically, the list notes that May was “voted the greatest guitarist of all time by Total Guitar Magazine,” as well as that “Queen’s performance at Live Aid in 1985 is recognized as the greatest live set in history.”

Expected May replied to the recognition with humility and purpose: “I am happy and grateful to receive this honor. I will consider the knighthood not so much as a reward, but more as a charge – a commission – for me to continue to fight for justice – for to be a voice for those who have no voice. I will strive to be worthy—to be that knight in shining armor.”

At the same time, he recognized another inherent advantage of accepting it. “Maybe a few more people will listen to me than they would otherwise, you know, if it’s Sir Brian on the phone,” he shared. Associated Press from his home.

Of course, May’s wife – the well-known actress Anita Dobson – can now also be called Lady May. “She’s thrilled to pieces. Yes, yes, she’s very happy about that. Yes, Lady Anita will enjoy it,” May continued, “and it’s a thrill for me to be able to kind of give her that . It makes me proud that she gets an honor next to me because God knows I wouldn’t be here without her.”

It is worth mentioning that May Received appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2005. Also Queen drummer Roger Taylor was chose as an OBE, or Officer of the Order of the British Empire, in the 2020 New Year’s Honors List. Naturally, May subsequently congratulated her bandmate in late December 2019 Instagram posts.

Congratulations to Sir Brian May and Lady May!
