Chad Kroeger adopts Southern accent on Nickelback song about smoking weed

Nickelback just debuted a new single, “High Time,” which is all about smoking weed, and it even finds a frontman Chad Kroeger assumes a bit of a southern accent on the country-flavored song.

It’s been a case of “expect the unexpected” when it comes to the latest Nickelback offerings from their upcoming album, get started, which will be published Nov. 18. First there was “San Quentin,” an ultra-heavy hard rock jam that led fans to believe that ‘Back’ had gone metalcore when they released the initial teaser. So come uber-nostalgic power ballad”Those days” and here we have one about rolling around in a van while rolling some joints.

Some people just walk the straight and narrow / Turns out life isn’t right for me / Because every time we cross state lines / We find the grass on the other side,” Canadian-born Kroeger sings with a slight southern drawl in his voice.

“High Time” is also imbued with a hint of funk in the verses, making it another remarkably dynamic track that Nickelback has made incredibly catchy, as they have for over 20 years now.

Nickelback, “High Time” lyrics

Same old, same town, going nowhere,
Need a whole new view in front of me
No card needed, no need to pack
And don’t care if we come back
Sitting still just wasn’t meant for me

Some people just go straight
It turns out that life is not right for me
For every time we cross state lines
We find the grass on the other side
Always seems to twist twice as green

Well, it’s about time you and I started rolling
Somewhere else we just have to be
The van I bought you thought was stolen
Looked like hell but felt like home to me

Strummin’, thumpin’ on the dashboard
Purple haze makes it hard to see
Two backwards dice, three of my friends
And four bald tires still roll right
Taste of inspiration is all we need.

Well, it’s about time you and I started rolling
(Like a rolling stone)
Somewhere else we just have to be
The van I bought you thought was stolen
(Hasn’t been stolen for a long time)
Looked like hell but felt like home to me
The Eagles got us down to California
(Songs we sing)
Beach boys made us surf the ocean
We get stoned on the way up to Colorado
(We’ve moved on)
And couldn’t see the forest for the trees

Better take a picture
Because honey, I bet
We won’t be here long
The freedom train keeps on running

Stop and take it slow
Top it off when we get low
The only way this can last
If you have ass, grass or gas.

Clappin’, Tappin’, get your groove on.
Front seat drums and back seat harmonies,
when we drive past your country
stick out your thumb if you need a ride
No one knows where this road will lead

Well, it’s about time you and I started rolling
(Like a rolling stone)
Somewhere else we just have to be
The van I bought you thought was stolen
(hasn’t been stolen for a long time)
Looked like hell but felt like home to me
The Eagles got us down to California
(Songs we sing)
Beach boys made us surf the ocean
We have Rocky Mountain high in Colorado
(We’ve moved on)
And couldn’t see the forest for the trees
