Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan was interviewed on Joe Rogan’s podcast and talked about how he thinks users of TikTok see him as an artist. It’s a pretty bleak prospect. Maynard says, “I’m not necessarily relevant.”
On it The Joe Rogan Experience from Oct. 25, 2022, Keenan and Rogan talked about staying relevant as a musician over time, and Keenan says he doesn’t think fans of TikTok will appreciate him. “I don’t want to be relevant to the TikTokers of the world… It’s not on their radar. The (things) that they’re listening to now… and reacting to now… I’m not necessarily relevant.”
Rogan then asks Keenan if he is personally concerned with being relevant. Keenan’s response includes a snarky dig at some of his contemporaries (who go unnamed). “You can’t (think) about whether you’re relevant or not. Because you’re going to start being desperate and getting plastic surgery and looking like a fucking alien and trying to put yourself into some stupid shit.” Keenan, so smiling , added: “I’m not talking to anybody. I’m not talking about my peers.”
Keenan continues, “The search for relevance turns to desperation very quickly. It stinks. So just keep your art man… (tool) is just to have fun creating.”
Rogan then says that Keenan has done a lot of “diversity” work, referring to his many projects besides Tool, such as Puscifer and A perfect circle. Keenan says this is due to his musical “relationship” with his various bandmates. “That’s the listening part. What’s Billy (Howerdel) doing, what’s Adam (Jones) Justin (Chancellor) and Danny (Carey) doing? What’s Matt (McJunkins) and Carina (Round) doing? I listen to what they’re doing and have it ( musical) conversation with them and build on those relationships. They’re different conversations with different people with different life experiences. The art and the sounds that come out of those people will be 100 percent different. Even if I’m the ordinary.”
Keenan says that if the audience didn’t know I was in Puscifer, someone “might think I’m the guy from A Perfect Circle, but probably not.”
Rogan and Keenan also tease about keeping one’s art (and life) fresh, martial arts and, oddly enough, Miley Cyrus. (It’s fun to hear Maynard say “Hannah Montana”) Watch the two in the clip below.
