Machine Gun Kelly takes on ‘Rock Community’ critics during AMAs speech

The dangerously spiked suit Machine Gun Kelly carried on American Music Awards ceremony on Sunday night (November 20) could have been a hidden message for his critics. Specifically, those in the “rock community” that he took aim at when he made his acceptance speech for Favorite Rock Artist during the ABC telecast.

After complaining that that particular suit was uncomfortable, he took on another uncomfortable facet in his life – the people who think he doesn’t deserve to be in the rock leagues. “There have been some people in the rock community who have called me a tourist, but they’re wrong – I’m a rocket man,” he bizarrely opened the speech, which did more to conjure. Elton John than anything else.

MGK then added, “We weren’t born on the moon, but we looked at it and we were curious, and then we went there … supposedly. And these last two rock albums were for me going to the moon. I’m not done exploring the universe yet, I’m all genres.” His explosive charge was then cut by ABC. Watch the video below.

It was his second consecutive year that MGK won the Favorite Rock Artist category and knocked out Imagine DragonsThe Lumineers, Maneskin and Red Hot Chili Peppers. It comes as the AMAs also added another rock-leaning award titles this year to expand the range of artists recognized in harder genres, so time will tell if MGK will hold their own in this arena for years to come . Ghost actually won the inauguration Favorite rock album Honour.

MGK was also recently given a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Album for his efforts in 2022 Mainstream sales although he has some pretty tough competition alongside The Black Keys, Elvis Costello & the Imposters, Idles, Ozzy Osbourne and Spoon. That broadcast airs in February.

His rock nominations come at a time when MGK declares he never “left rap” or changed genreswhich makes it even more confusing.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporterexplained the artist, “I’m freaking talented and I added four great rap albums to my catalog. So what I did was I added – never left, left or changed. For the same year I was the most-viewed YouTube video putter-outer with all rap, which was my lockdown sessions, which got more views than almost any of my other videos. And it was hundreds of millions of views of me rapping.”

So maybe next year he will find a completely new ‘community’ to be part of the upcoming award ceremony.
