Lil Nas X‘s new single “Late to Da Party” with YoungBoy Never Broke Again has arrived – and he’s aiming directly at BET.
After weeks in which the rapper shared his dissatisfaction with the network, after receiving zero nominations for Sunday’s BET Awards, the song starts and ends with the song F— BET (yeah), f— BET (yeah), f— BET (yeah, yes) . “
The trail did not fall until Friday (June 24), after a series of Lil Nas X” powerful campaigns that included jokes and insults directed at BET. “SENT TO THEN PARTY TONIGHT!” that Billboard Hot 100 card tops the caption a Star warstheme parody video the day of the release. The caption opens with an explicit message to BET and then continues with yellow text on a black background, a la the films: “NBA YOUNGBOY is under house arrest, trapped on the isolated planet HATU. The Brutal Empire of Terror (BET) has betrayed LIL NAS X and has turned its back on him after using him for impact. ” It continues: “With the music industry in turmoil, the galaxy is looking for a hero. NAS must use the ancient power of EDITING to liberate YB and defeat the evil EFFORT before time runs out …”
Lil Nas X first called BET on June 1 in a series of since-deleted tweets and jokingly thanked the network for offering him “an excellent zero nominations” for their 2022 awards, despite having what he called “3 of the greatest songs from last year and a critically acclaimed album. ” In one of these tweets, LNX directly called out what he saw as the homophobia of the standard music industry. “I just feel that black gays have to fight to be seen in this world, and even when we get to the top, mfs try to pretend we are invisible,” he wrote.
BET responded with a statement on June 7, saying: “We love Lil Nas X. He was nominated for a BET Award for Best New Artist in 2020, and we proudly displayed his extraordinary talent and creativity in the show twice: He appeared in “Old Town. Road ‘with Billy Ray Cyrus at the BET Awards 2019 and his BET Awards 2021 performance was a highlight of our show. No one cheered louder that night than BET.”
On Tuesday (June 21), prior to the release of the new song, Lil Nas X posted one series of images in support of the new song, where he was adorned in a blue Louis Vuitton look while holding a save cash to his ear while sitting on the toilet – next to a bag of money. He accompanied the photos with a funny video recorded in what appears to be a grocery store.
