Why Is Twitter Calling Ghost ‘Weezer For Goths’?

Ghost is just Weezer for the goth kids.” That’s right one Twitter user summed up a rock music comparison that has gone viral this month. “Ghost is the Weezer for goth women,” he thought another music fan. And those tweets are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to this trend.

Apparently it was all started by one TikTok comment that meant the same thing. Now Twitter is full of music fans pontificating on Ghost as the goth Weezer. Of course, there are many others who wonder how the trend even became a reality in the first place. And then there’s a creative fan who capitulated to the viral nature of the idea with a Ghost and Weezer song mashup which they had previously created.

Even before the viral trend of comparing the two rock artists appeared, Weezer and Ghost already showed some similarities to each other. Last year both recorded their own versions of the classic metal song “Enter Sandman“to Metallica‘s Metallica’s Blacklist covers album – although Ghost is one theatrical heavy rock band and Weezer is one nerdy alt-rock group.

This month, Ghost-Weezer mashup is doing the rounds takes music from Ghost’s blasphemous 2019 single”Mary on a cross“and puts it under Weezer’s vocals from their crisp 1994 hit”Buddy Holly.”

In March was Tobias Forge-led Ghost released their fifth studio album, EMPIRE. It contains singles such as “The twenties“”Call me little sunshine“and”The Hunter’s Moon.”

In February, Weezer celebrated 30 years like a band. That Rivers Cuomo-fronted act are now in the midst of a four-EP release spree with their ongoing SZNS project.
