Here’s why Chris Rock turned down the offer to host the 2023 Oscars

Chris Rock told the audience at a Phoenix stand-up show this week that he was offered to host the 2023 Oscars after the incident in which Will Smith stormed the stage and punched him in the face.

According to AZ Central, the comedian turned down the gig as it would be like returning to a crime scene, citing the murder case against OJ Simpson, whose ex-wife’s killing started by leaving her mother’s glasses at an Italian restaurant. Rock said returning to the Oscars would be like asking Nicole Brown Simpson “to go back to the restaurant.”

The tense moment in March occurred after Rock made an onstage joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, during the Oscar ceremony. “Sure, I love you. GI Jane 2can’t wait to see it,” the comedian said of her shaved head – which, unbeknownst to Rock, was caused by the actress’ struggling with alopecia.

Pinkett Smith rolled her eyes in response as Smith laughed. Shortly after was King Richard The actor stormed the stage to punch Rock, who tried to continue his banter, before Smith started yelling from his seat: “Keep my wife’s name out of your fingering mouth.”

Smith apologized for his behavior in a formula statement submitted to his Instagram on March 28; he moreover quit from his membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and has been prohibited from the Academy Awards and related Academy events for 10 years.

In July, Smith uploaded a video to YouTube, apologizes further. “I’ve reached out to Chris and the message that came back is that he’s not ready to talk. When he is, he’s going to reach out. I want to say to you, Chris, I apologize to you. My behavior was unacceptable and I’m here anytime you’re ready to talk,” he said.

Smith continued: “I want to apologize to Chris’s mother. I saw an interview [she] did, and it was one of those things I just wasn’t aware of. I didn’t think but how many people were hurt at that moment. I want to apologize to Chris’ mother, I want to apologize to Chris’ family, specifically Tony Rock. We had a good relationship. Tony Rock was my husband. This is probably irreversible. I spent the last three months replaying and understanding the nuance and complexity of what happened in that moment. I’m not going to try to unpack all of that right now, but I can tell you all, there’s no part of me that thinks that was the right way to behave at that moment. No part of me thinks that is the optimal way to deal with a feeling of disrespect or insult.”
