Will there be a ‘Black Panther 3’? Marvel isn’t sure yet

You know how it goes: Marvel is as much about what’s coming up in the ever-expanding future as it is about what’s currently in theaters or streaming on Disney+. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever isn’t even in theaters yet, and people already want to know: Is there going to be one Black Panther 3? And if so, when will it be released? These questions are compounded by the fact that the franchise has already lost its first star, Chadwick Boseman, who died in 2020 just before production on the sequel was set to begin.

If Marvel has plans for such a project, they are not talking about it publicly. In interviews with Varietyboth directors Ryan Cooler and producer Kevin Feige stated that (unless they are lying) no plan has been made for a direct Wakanda forever successor. Feige had this to say:

I go back to what I said when we decided to do ‘Wakanda Forever’ after losing Chad [Boseman] … this mythology and this ensemble and these characters deserve to continue and will continue when we’re all gone, I hope, and will continue forever in movies as it has in comics for more than 50 years.

Of course, that’s no guarantee of another movie. Wakanda’s mythology could continue in other films involving other Marvel characters. Although not yet officially announced, Marvel is also reportedly in development a Disney+ TV show set around the world of Wakandawhich could continue the story of Wakanda forever without there ever being one Black Panther 3 on the big screen.

If such a film happens, it’s also not clear that Coogler will be involved. He told Variety “definitely” that he “has no idea what I’m doing now as a writer and director.” He also called rumors that he was a candidate to direct the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars “crazy.” So whatever the future of Black Panther franchise is that it could look quite different from what has been released so far.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever opens in theaters on Friday.
