Adult Swim is cancelled Tuca and Bertie after three seasons, which marks second once the animated series has fallen under the axe.
Tuca and Bertie centered around Tuca Toucan (Tiffany Haddish) and Roberta “Bertie” Songthrush (Ali Wong), two friends who live together and guide each other through life’s ups and downs. Tuca and Bertie originally debuted on Netflix, but the streaming service canceled the series after just one season. Fortunately, Adult Swim came along save and ordered two more seasons. Creator Lisa Hanawalt stepped up Twitter to thank fans of the series and expressed her hope that one day she will be able to finish the story.
“To all our fans – we love you and can’t thank you enough for your support over the years,Lisa Hanawalt wrote. “Never stop making weird fan art (and dressing up as the characters for Halloween!), it brings me endless joy. Working on Adult Swim was creatively fulfilling, our leads were all smart and thoughtful, and I’m grateful we got the space to make all these wild and heartfelt episodes about things that mean a lot to me.“Hanawalt added that she is”so proud of the work that all my talented colleagues and collaborators have done on this show. Please watch the end credits and note all these names in the cast and crew. I’m also very happy that we could be covered by The Animation Guild and the Writers Guild of America. I hope that all show creators who have the leverage to fight to organize their productions will continue to do so.”
Although the story of Tuca and Bertie may have ended sooner than Lisa Hanawalt expected, she said she still has “a beautiful and strange ending to T&B in mind, hopefully one day we will get the chance to finish this story. Meanwhile, I’m not done creating. I’ve seen so many people connect with this show on a deep level and I’m going to keep telling stories like this no matter what.“
