Tom Hanks weighs in on the “Nepo Babies” debate and defends his own kind

There is an old saying that goes, “It’s not what you know. It’s who you know.” The latest New York Magazine article addressing the issue of certain celebrities getting their break due to their family relationships is sparking discussions. The article refers to them as “nepo babies” and it has received responses from some of the more notable people on the subject. Tom Hanks has his own children involved in show business, and he addressed the issue in a recent interview The Hollywood Reporter.

While promoting his film, A man named OttoHanks explains in an interview with Reuters (via The Sun) that this view is not as outlandish as it is claimed to be. “Look, this is a family business. It’s what we’ve done forever. It’s what all our kids grew up in. If we were a plumbing supply company or if we ran the florist down the street, the whole family would at some point put in the time, even if it was just inventory at the end of the year.”

Hanks’ most famous son, Colin, has fronted his own projects and has been able to lead a successful career in acting. And the rest of Tom’s children, along with actress Rita Wilson, work in the entertainment industry in a notable capacity. However, Hanks argues that it is the quality of the work they put out that is most important, regardless of how the opportunities arose.

“What doesn’t change, no matter what happens, no matter what your last name is, is whether it works or not.” Hanks explains. “That’s the problem whenever any of us go out and try to tell a fresh story or create something that has a beginning and a middle and an end. It doesn’t matter what our last names are. We have to to do the work to make it a true and authentic experience for the audience. That’s a much bigger task than worrying about whether or not someone is going to try to gift us.”

These comments come after responses from actors such as Jamie Lee Curtis, Kate Hudson, Lily Allen and Allison Williams, daughter of journalist Brian Williams, who can be seen in the upcoming M3GANas they defend their position as children of entertainers who have made their own careers.
