Certainly the first Super Mario Bros. the movie didn’t work that well. But it’s been 30 years! And this time the film is animated. So it will definitely be very different.
This time too, the film apparently has the title Super Mario Bros., presumably to avoid confusion with the disastrous live-action film from the early 90s, in which Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo played Mario and Luigi. This time the characters are voted off Chris Pratt and Charlie Day, respectively. Or maybe they just want the title to separate these Mario brothers from all the other people out there who are brothers named Mario. There are many of them.
So far, we know next to nothing about the film beyond the cast and the fact that it’s an animated interpretation of the beloved Nintendo game series, but we’re about to get quite a bit more information. Today, Universal announced that they will release the first trailer for the film during New York Comic-Con next month. The premiere takes place on 6 October at 4 p.m. ET.
Here’s the film’s synopsis, which includes the rest of the voice cast and their roles:
The film is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic (collaborators on Teen Titans Go!, Teen Titans Go! To the Movies) from a script by Matthew Fogel (The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, Minions: The Rise of Gru). Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek and Sebastian Maniscalco like Spike.
Donkey Kong in Super Mario Bros.? It’s kind of weird… is it a Mario movie or a Smash Bros. movie? Super Mario Bros. is scheduled to open in theaters on April 7, 2023.
