Robert De Niro vs Al Pacino – Face Off

Over the years, cinema has shown several actors who share so much chemistry that they end up appearing in several films together. In the late 60s and early 70s, Paul Newman and Robert Redford teamed up for timeless roles in THE STINK and BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID. While the not-too-distant past has seen the likes of Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson collaborate across several successful genre films, and more recently Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone have lit up the screen as a couple in love through several films, most notably 2016’s LA LA COUNTRY.

Today we compare two of the biggest titans to ever grace the screen. We pit the raging bull himself, ROBERT DE NIRO, against Tony Montana incarnate, AL PACINO! These two acting legends have only shared the screen four times (so far), most famously in Michael Mann’s HEATbut their lasting legacy from these films and in separate endeavors as well is unparalleled.

De Niro’s acting legacy is already cemented, and he boasts turns in several films that are now etched into the minds of moviegoers everywhere. He really exploded onto the acting scene in the 1973s MENE STREETSquickly followed by an epic twist when Vito Corleone enters THE GODFATHER: PART TWOwhile TAXI DRIVER in 1976 showcased its darker side brilliantly. Subsequently, he has appeared in many films, where he has created one-liners with gusto and also displayed a skillful ability for comedy with roles in MIDNIGHT RACE and MEET THE PARENTS.

Al Pacino, on the other hand, has had a slightly different but no less extraordinary journey in cinema than De Niro’s. It was 1972’s epic trilogy opener THE GODFATHER that first saw Pacino chew up some scenery as a reluctant mob boss in action, Michael Corleone. He would go on to reprise this role in parts two and three, but those would be his roles in SERPICO, DOG DAY AFTERNOONand especially SCARF that would catapult the actor into the stratosphere and kick-start a career that has since become legendary.

But which of these acting legends has had the richest, most fulfilling and most impressive career to date? They each have contrasting acting styles, approaches and techniques. While their credits include many bonafide classics, they’ve also shared a similar amount of turkeys to put a few dents in their otherwise excellent reputation.
