M3GAN 2 will be dancing in theaters again as Universal Pictures has slated the sequel for a 2025 release date.
Audiences can’t get enough of the murderous artificial intelligence doll known as M3GAN. The film has proven to be a huge success for Universal Pictures, so it should come as no surprise that the studio has officially scheduled M3GAN 2.0 for one 17 January 2025 release.
Successful horror films tend to make their sequels in a short amount of time, so I’m actually kind of impressed that Universal is waiting two years between films. This could be due to a variety of factors, including scheduling, but I’m glad they’re not rushing out the next installment just for the sake of it. Akela Cooper (Malignant), who wrote the first film, returns to write the screenplay M3GAN 2.0. Allison Williams and Violent McGraw are set to reprise their roles for the sequel, with Williams also serving as a producer.
After the trailer for M3GAN went viral, Universal Pictures reportedly resumed discussions about a sequel November. Producer James Wan did not want to comment on the news about one possible sequel before the first film had even been released, but he teased, “I’m not just thinking of one story; I think about the larger world. So if we are lucky enough to tell other stories, we can withdraw from the larger world.“
Gerard Johnstone (Housebound) instructed M3GAN, but no word on whether he’ll return for the sequel. “M3GAN is a marvel of artificial intelligence, a lifelike doll programmed to be a child’s best companion and a parent’s greatest ally,” reads the official synopsis. “Designed by genius toy company roboticist Gemma, M3GAN can listen and watch and learn as she becomes a friend and teacher, playmate and protector for the child she bonds with. When Gemma suddenly becomes the caretaker of her orphaned 8-year-old niece, Cady, Gemma is unsure and unprepared to become a parent. Under intense pressure at work, Gemma decides to pair her M3GAN prototype with Cady in an attempt to solve both problems – a decision that will have unimaginable consequences.” M3GAN currently playing int heaters and you can see a review of the film from our own Chris Bumbray right here.
