Luther images provide a first look at the upcoming film

Idris Elba may be out of playing James Bond, but that doesn’t mean he won’t deliver another fantastic character for fans as Detective Chief Inspector John Luther returns to the screen next year. With the film – the first after five series – four months out, first look images have been revealed.

In a piece published in empireIdris Elba teased some details about the locations and scope of what’s to come Luther movie. “We’re really peeling back the onion here because we had the time and scope to do it…It also pays [series creator and writer] Neil [Cross] much more, you know, Luther country to play with, in terms of where Luther can go, how he walks, what the landscape is like.”

Elba previously said one Luther movie would have “more murders, more Volvos, more frowning Luther… basically we just want to try and bring it to a much bigger audience and scale, and maybe internationally too.” There’s no word on exactly how many more Volvos are coming, but Idris Elba is making good on the international aspect, as seen in the photo below:

Elba built on this, saying: “We’re breaking out of the dirty streets of London, we’re taking it outside a bit…And it’s amazing. It feels like we’re now entering a different life Luther experience.”

In addition to Idris Elba, the cast also includes Cynthia Erivo and Andy Serkis-“Erivo will play a detective who also happens to be Luther’s nemesis, while Serkis will play the film’s criminal villain.” The film will be directed by Jamie Payne, who helmed all four episodes of series five.

Series one of Luther was broadcast in 2010, while the most recent fifth series ended in 2019. Viewership for Luther was at an all-time high for that season, showing that its fan base was as strong as ever.

Luther will be published on March 23, 2023.
