When Russo brothers killed Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, i Avengers: Endgamethe tragedy sent shock waves throughout Marvel Cinematic Universe. Not everyone was thrilled with Tony Stark taking a nap after helping defeat Thanos once and for all, including. Iron Man director Jon Favreau. Favreau couldn’t believe what the Russo brothers were up to, and he feared the worst for fans of the character.
During a conversation with Vanity Fair, Joe and Anthony Russo shared that Favreau at one point asked them not to kill Tony Stark. The duo say Favreau called them after reading the script and asked them to reconsider. “Do you really have to kill Iron Man” Favreau asked.
Joe added, “I remember walking around the corner of a scene on the phone with Favreau trying to talk him off a ledge. Because he’s like, ‘You can’t do this. It’s going to destroy people and you don’t want them, you know, walking out of the theater and into traffic.’ We did it anyway.”
That’s cold blooded, Joe. However, it is fitting that the Infinity Saga would end with the death of Tony Start, since he was there in the beginning. At the same time, Stark’s sacrificial play destroyed a portion of fans, but created one of the most heroic moments in MCU history. I will never forget the reaction of the audience at that moment when I saw Avengers: Endgame at my local theater. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house. People left the theater in tears, simultaneously cursing the film for being huge and destructive.
Fortunately, we know that no one was hurt due to Tony Stark’s death. Could you imagine the headlines if that wasn’t the case? The press would have had a field day with Marvel and the Russos could have been cancelled.
