James Gunn defends DC casting decisions

James Gunn defends DC casting decisions, saying whoever’s best for the role — rookie or veteran — will get it.

James Gunn has taken a lot of heat since stepping into the role of co-CEO and co-chairman of DC, and he’s not afraid to stand up to internet trolls. In the latest example (at least at the time of publication), he defended the studio’s casting process, saying there is no discrimination.

At the weekend, James Gunn was approached Twitter with demand for “Find fresh actors who can create brilliant characters and create new memories for the audience instead of swimming in the same muddy pond.” Not unexpectedly, Gunn replied. “We have hundreds of roles to cast. As I always do, some will be brand new faces, some will be actors I’ve worked with before, and some will be actors you know that I’ve never worked with. It the most important thing is that the actor fits the role and they are easy to work with.”

Fans thinking they can make decisions is nothing new. Still, James Gunn directly addressing it has us wondering: Will any major players from the Marvel Cinematic Universe come over to DC Studios? With Gunn’s last Marvel outing, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3threatening (it’s in the cinema May 5), it is possible that he could recruit Dave Bautista to trade Drax the Destroyer for Lobo, a role the wrestler-turned-actor has expressed interest in playing.

No matter how or who he casts, James Gunn will undoubtedly continue to get smacked by anyone with a social media account who wants to do so. At least he is aware of it. “No one likes to be harassed or called names – but to be honest we’ve been through significantly worse. Disrespectful name-calling will never, ever influence our actions…We knew there would be a period of turbulence when we took this gig knowing that sometimes we have to make hard and not-so-obvious choices, especially in the wake of the fragile nature of what came before us.”

What do you think of James Gunn’s casting statements? Do you think the best possible actor is prioritized? Will moving some from Marvel to DC feel like overkill? Let us know your opinion below!
