Indiana Jones 5: new photos and plot revealed

Fresh from Empire’s first look at Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones 5 via this month’s cover comes a series of new images that give us a clear look at Ford’s older Indy, plus Mads Mikkelsen and Boyd Holbrook’s characters. Looking at Mikkelsen, he appears to be a dead ringer for Ronald Lacey’s Toht from Raiders of the Lost Arkand actually empire the story confirms that Jones will be fighting Nazis again – in 1969. According to the report, the premise revolves around the space race, which, as screenwriter Jez Butterworth notes, “the simple fact is that the moon landing program was run by a bunch of ex-Nazis.” He notes that the conflict revolves around “how ‘ex’ they are is the question. And it’s coming out of Indy’s nose…”

The story reveals that although Mikkelsen may resemble Toht, he actually plays a character named Voller, who is apparently based on Wernher von Braun. Butterworth notes that he is a character who wants to right some of the wrongs of the past. “There’s something that could make the world a much better place to live in. He’d love to get his hands on it. Indiana Jones would love to get his hands on it, too. And then we have a story.”

To me, it sounds like the long-rumored time travel aspect is happening, which is pretty exciting, because who wouldn’t want to see what Indiana Jones was up to during World War II? As Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade was set in 1938, and thereafter Crystal Skull Kingdom picked up in 1957, leaving us with quite a bit of time that could be explored. Will Indy meet a younger version of himself? I guess we’ll see when Disney releases the long-awaited trailer, which should also reveal the title, sometime in the next week or so (I’d expect it before Thanksgiving).

Meanwhile, our own Alex Maidy watched teaser trailer on D23 – here is his overview:
