George Takei Says William Shatner Was ‘Star Trek’s One ‘Prima Donna’

It looks like tensions are flaring up again between the two of them Star Trek‘s surviving co-stars. George Takei and William Shatner have had heads on their backs in the past, and despite playing well at press events and the like, it seems there’s still quite a bit of tension behind the scenes. For some reason, the two can’t seem to get along. Shatner thinks Takei is riding the waves that Captain Kirk created, while Takei thinks Shatner is a total diva. Are both sides justified? Who’s to say? It’s just a shame to see them struggle.

The latest spat appears to have started earlier in November of this year, with Shatner insulting Takei in the an interview with The Times of London. During the interview, he discussed his career over the years, his experience further Star Trek, and his feelings regarding his own members. He said:

Sixty years after an incident, they are still on that trail. Don’t you think that’s a little strange? It’s like a disease. I began to understand that they were doing it for publicity… George has never stopped blacking out my name. These people are bitter and bitter. I’ve run out of patience with them. Why trust people who are consumed by envy and hatred?

Takei, for his part, is not without his own barbs. In an interview with The Guardian, he tries to appear as impartial and indifferent as possible. It doesn’t take much reading between the lines to tell he’s angry. He said:

I know he came to London to promote his book and talked about me wanting publicity using his name. So I decided that I don’t need his name to get publicity. I have a much more substantial topic that I would like to talk about, so I will not refer to Bill at all in this interview. Although I just did. He is just an excessive old man and I will leave him to him. I don’t want to play his game.

Takei also said that there was camaraderie among the original Trek crew – “except for one [meaning Shatner]who was a prima donna.”

This can be a problem that lasts until the end of the coster’s life, but ideally they would have everything fixed before then.
