Furiosa: George Miller wrote the screenplay before Mad Max: Fury Road began filming

Seven years passed between the publication of Mad Max: Fury Road and the start of production on the prequel Furiouswhich is currently filming, but director George Miller has written the script for it Furious ready for a long time. Actually during an interview with AV Club Miller revealed that the script for Furious was already “substantially complete” at that time Mad Max: Fury Road started filming way back in 2012.

Miller said,

When we wrote Mad Max, the task was to tell a story that was always on the run and to see how much the audience could pick up in passing. That was one of the tricks of the Mad Max: Fury Road, that there would be references to things about where she comes from, why they do things, but it was always on the run. There were very few moments of silence. We never explained how she lost her arm. We never explain what the actual green spot for many moms was. We never explained the function of the citadel. So we had the script pretty much done before we shot Fury Road, and we did it because it came out of wanting to explain to everyone who Furiosa was—to Charlize when she took on the role, and to all the actors and designers and everyone else who worked on the Citadel and so on. The feeling was, ugh, this is a pretty good script, and then I kept saying to myself, “if Fury Road works, I really want to tell this story.” So it came, I don’t want to say randomly, but it came out of a need to explain [Fury Road’s] world that, as I said, essentially happened over three days and two nights. It’s really an attempt to explain how that world came to be.”

The filmmaker also confirmed that he has written another Mad Max story that would presumably be Mad Max: The Wasteland history that he has referenced here and there over the past seven years.

We also wrote, not a script but almost in novel form, Nico Lathouris and I, what happened to Max the year before, and that’s something we’ll look at further down the track later. But by telling each other the story of Furiosa, everything is in Fury Road had to be explained. In my mind, I have a backstory about Doof Warrior playing guitar. How could a blind man, who all he can do is play the guitar, how is he going to survive in a wasteland where everyone is in extremis? How did he get to be there? So we wrote little stories for each character as we created them Fury Road.”

Directed by Miller from a script he wrote with Nico Lathouris, Furious has the following synopsis:

As the world fell, young Furiosa is torn from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a large Biker Horde led by Warlord Dementus. Sweeping through the wasteland, they encounter the citadel, presided over by Immortan Joe. As the two tyrants battle for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home.

Anya Taylor-Joy plays a younger version of the Furiosa character Charlize Theron stars in Mad Max: Fury Road and is joined in the cast by Chris Hemsworth (Thor) and Tom Burke (CB strike).
