Friday the 13th: Sean Cunningham’s Cameo Page Says New Sequel Coming in 2023

Four years ago it was reported that Roy Lee’s production company Vertigo Entertainment and NBA star LeBron James’ production company SpringHill Entertainment teamed up to produce a new entry in Friday the 13th franchise. Earlier this month, Lee told our friends at Damn disgusting with whom he would like to talk about his involvement Friday the 13th and “You might hear something by the end of the year… on that front.” Now, some eagle-eyed fans like the YouTuber CRAVEN Something scary have noticed the original Friday the 13th Director/producer Sean S. Cunningham’s page on Cameo’s website says we’re getting a new one Friday the 13th movie in 2023!

Here’s exactly what Cunningham has Cameo page say:

Sean S. Cunningham directed and produced the seminal horror film Friday the 13th and created the iconic villain Jason Voorhees. The film has spawned 12 installments with a 13th planned for next year.

The trial between Cunningham and Friday the 13th screenwriter Victor Miller, the issue that has dogged the franchise for several years was officially resolved a while back, though not in the way Cunningham had hoped. The courts chose to give Miller the copyright to the original Friday the 13th within the US, meaning that Cunningham and Miller would have to work out some sort of deal with each other before a new film could go into production (without either threatening to file another lawsuit).

Three months ago, Cunningham said that both sides of the argument are “really dug into foxholes. They’re not going to throw any grenades, but I don’t think anyone is going to call for peace talks.” But with Lee’s quote and Cunningham’s Cameo page now offering hope, it looks like Cunningham and Miller may have finally made peace with each other.

Thirteen years have passed since the last time Friday the 13th movie, so I really hope a new one finally comes forward. We will keep you updated whenever additional information is revealed.

Fans are already pointing out that there’s a Friday the 13th next October, which would seem like the perfect time to release the new film… if not for the fact that David Gordon Green and Blumhouse’s revival of The Exorcist has already claimed that date.
