A new bomb report from Variety that examines how Black Adam Star Dwayne Johnson may have made an ultimately unsuccessful bid to land a major role in the DCEU, a few surprising details have revealed. One of the most shocking is that Ezra Miller’s The lightning may still have a future at the James Gunn and Peter Safran-run DC once the troubled actor’s film comes out this summer. Many assumed the studios would cut ties with the notoriously erratic star. Still, the Variety report notes that Miller has been behaving well since starting mental health treatment over the summer.
According to various rumours, The lightning is one of the best-reviewed films in DC history, so the studio may be doubling down on what could be a valuable new franchise. The report also claims that Jason Momoa’s Aquaman and Zachary Levi’s Shazam could both have a future at DC, though one has to imagine that all depends on how well their upcoming films do. Shazam: Wrath of the Gods comes out on March 17while Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom comes out on 25 December 2023.
Of course, should any of the films underperform, one imagines the new DC bosses will do a reset. The report actually suggests that Black Adam ultimately underperformed at the box office relative to its budget. For his part, Henry Cavill’s Superman appears to be collateral damage, and the report notes that the decision had been made to move forward without Cavill way back in 2018, before being brought back into the fold by Johnson, whose ex-wife, Dany Garcia, is Cavill’s former manager and current advisor.
Ultimately, the shift in power behind the scenes at DC has had significant consequences for a lot of films in development, with the infamous shelving of Batgirl to be the most extreme. It will be interesting to see how the success or failure of the four DC movies hitting theaters this year (including Blue Beetle) affects Gunn and Safran’s plans going forward.
Do you think it’s fair that Miller stays with DC while Cavill gets dumped? Tell us in the comments.
