Cloverfield: Joe Barton comments on writing the new entry in the franchise

Back in February 2021 it was announced to iBoy writer Joe Barton – who at the time was supposed to be the showrunner for Gotham P.D series on HBO Max – had been hired to write a new post in Cloverfield franchise. That Gotham P.D series has since been scrapped, but that Cloverfield the project is still moving forward, as evidenced by that fact Under the Shadow‘s Babak Anvari signed on to direct the film back in September. Barton was recently in the press for her Netflix show The Bastard Son & The Devil Himselfand Variety took the opportunity to ask him something Cloverfield questions.

When asked if he is co-writing the script with producer JJ Abrams, Barton replied: “No, I write it on my own, JJ is the producer on it. So I go away and do my drafts and then he gives notes and the Bad Robot bosses give notes and then he jumps in every now and then and looks at drafts and stuff. I’m probably imagining the next one, because Babak Anvari just got to direct, so we’re closer to production. I’m doing some revisions at the moment, and the hope would be that this would be the last kind of big script push, and then we’d get down to making it.

He was then asked what it’s like to work on a project where fans have such high expectations. He said,I like it. I like the pressure of it. And I like that there are expectations. There are people who are excited about it and there will be people [who] I think it’s going to be a little bit defensive because there’s a certain pretty hardcore fan base, especially for the first movie. But it’s a bit like withBastard son“, you know, that book has hardcore fans as well, and people are kind of… they’re waiting for you to get fucked, I guess in a way. I feel very positive about the creative [on the “Cloverfield” sequel], I think what we’re going to do with it is going to be really good. If I didn’t think we had a good idea, I didn’t actually think it would be good, then I’d be worried. But I’m really excited about the potential of what we’re doing with itCloverfield, and especially the story that we made up. I don’t know, I just think I really want to see it, I think it’s going to be a good movie. People wait with different prejudices or prejudices or whatever, but all you can do at the end of the day is try to make something that’s really good and then give it to them and see.

Barton didn’t give away any plot details. As you would expect from a Bad Robot production, this one is being kept under wraps. All we’ve heard so far is that unlike the first Cloverfield (see it HERE), this movie will not be in the recording format found.

Looking forward to seeing someone else Cloverfield movie? If so, what do you hope to see in it? Share your thoughts on this one by leaving a comment below.
