Lionsgate has just acquired a horror project called Breederswho has Olivia Cooke (Bates Motel) associated with star. According to Hollywood Reporter, Do not look up Manager Adam McKay was one of the originators of the idea for this project and will produce the film with Todd Schulman through Hyperobject Industries. Breeders marks the directorial debut for Kelsey Bollig, who has previously directed a handful of short films and won her first Best Screenplay Award at the age of 12 for her screenplay. Big kids play manslaughter at the Hollywood Shriekfest Horror Film Festival.
Bollig has not written the script for Breeders. The script was written by Brian Steele, who co-created the idea with McKay. Details of the plot are kept secret so far, but a source told The Hollywood Reporter that this will be “a social horror thriller that is tonally in the style of Fresh“. Which was also produced by McKay. I thought Fresh was great so it sounds good to me. JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray gave the film a 9/10 review, which you can read on THIS LINK.
Lionsgate production president Erin Westerman said the studio is happy to work with Bollig on her first film, which
her film comes straight out of a horror sensibility she’s honed all her life, and Breeders is a perfect example – it will be scary, and Olivia Cooke is perfect for it. It is also a thrill to work with Adam, who invented this idea and will be a shepherd for Kelsey’s project with expertise and a first-class sense of history. ”
Scott O’Brien brought Breeders to Lionsgate and will oversee the project along with Brady Fujikawa.
I have not seen any of Bollig’s short film works, but she has a fantastic article about horror, which you can read on Yahoo. I look forward to seeing how Breeders is going to show up. How does this project sound to you so far? Tell us about it by leaving a comment below.
