CASH OFFICE UPDATE: It looks like DC League of Super-Pets is flying lower than expected, with a revised three-day opening projection of $23 million. This is quite disappointing for a DC-related property, even though it is a children’s film, with a voice cast that includes Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart. I’m sure Johnson will have much more luck in the DC Universe with Black Adam, and let’s be honest – this always seemed like a bit of a sham, didn’t it? The problem with movies like this and Disney’s is similarly underwhelming Light years is that audiences have gotten used to animated films like this via their streaming services. In fact, a quick turnover to HBO Max seems likely for this animated film.
DC League of Super-Pets is still predicted to come in at number one, with Deadline reports that Jordan Peele’s Nix likely to come in second with $19 million (just one million more than we predicted), after a not bad second week stumble of 57%. The only other semi-wide opening this weekend is BJ Novak’s Revenge (which we liked), with it likely DOA at the box office with a $1.6 million start. It is scheduled to hit PVOD in just 17 days where it can find its audience.
In happier news, WB’s Elvis continues to find an audience, with the film grossing $129 million to date. If you notice, the movie has yet to hit HBO Max as word of mouth has been strong enough that WB looks to let it continue its solid run at the box office. Blumhouse The black phone (that we loved) has also held up better than expected, earning $83 million domestically. In the meantime Top Gun: Maverick continues to kick ass at the box office, still rounding out the top 5 for an estimated $650 million + total.
Stay tuned for more box office updates as the weekend progresses. Planning to see something this weekend? Tell us in the comments!
