Batgirl star Michael Keaton weighs in on Warners’ decision to shelve the film

Before you get sick of hearing about Batgirl news, let’s get a word from the OG modern Bat himself, Michael Keaton. For those who may be out of the loop – when a major corporate merger took place with Discovery and Warner Bros, new studio head David Zaslav made a controversial decision to shelve the nearly completed Batgirl film with no plan to release for a tax credit. Almost every cast member involved has shared a reaction in one way or another.

The film was supposed to mark a return to Keaton’s version of Batman after his reintroduction in the upcoming DC film and PR nightmare, The lightning. Keaton won big at the 2022 Emmys for his performance in the limited TV series, Addicted. When pressing, this was an opportunity for him to finally comment on the matter, as reported by Variety.

When asked about it, Keaton replies, “I think it was a business decision. I assume it was a good one. I really don’t know.” And when asked when he thinks he’ll don the cape and cowl again, Keaton joked, “A little later tonight, probably if you’re lucky. We’ll see. It was good. It was fun. I really have no idea.”

Earlier this week, another cast member of the scrapped film, Brendan Fraserwas asked about it when he makes the circuit The whale. Fraser says, “It’s disappointing. The fans really wanted to see this movie made. Leslie Grace is a dynamo. The movie was shot and designed for a smaller screen. In this age that we’ve come out of now between streaming service and theatrical release, it ended up being be the canary in the coal mine.”
