M3GAN Director Details Original ending, why it was cut

While M3GAN has been a huge hit since its recent premiere, the killer android movie was originally supposed to have a very different ending than it did in its final version.

Talking to Variety in a recent interview, director Gerard Johnstone confirmed supervising puppeteer Adrien Morot’s statement that the film was originally intended to have a much more CGI-heavy ending.

“They had this fight with Bruce and there would be another part of it where they thought they had gotten away and Bruce essentially … they leave the workshop where they had this big fight and then they hear a ‘kalun!’ and it’s Bruce’s head that gets thrown,” Johnstone said. “And then, through the smoke from the doorway, M3GAN appears as a disembodied torso, and Bruce holds her from behind and lumbers down the corridor. It was amazing and I was really in love with it. But we couldn’t do it in a row practical reasons. We tried to shoot that version and the physics didn’t work. There were all these logistical things. So that’s why we ended up doing the version we did. But I love the version we did, even though cool idea. I love the version we got because it made Cady’s character so much more interesting.”

Although the ending that made it into the film also involves a big fight with Bruce – a large, human-controlled robot introduced early in the film – the fight is much more one-sided, although M3GAN comes back from the dead” scares despite the fact that it was easily separated by Bruce.

M3GAN is a marvel of artificial intelligence, a lifelike doll programmed to be a child’s greatest companion and a parent’s greatest ally,” reads the film’s synopsis. “Designed by genius roboticist Gemma of the toy company, M3GAN can listen and see and learn when she is friend and teacher, playmate and protector of the child she is attached to.

When Gemma suddenly becomes the caretaker of her orphaned 8-year-old niece, Cady, Gemma is unsure and unprepared to become a parent. Under intense pressure at work, Gemma decides to pair her M3GAN prototype with Cady in an attempt to solve both problems – a decision that will have unimaginable consequences.”

M3GAN now playing in cinemas.
