In a recent interview with Empire MagazineElba – who starred in the original series as Detective Inspector John Luther – teased the highly-anticipated film, saying it breaks “out of the grimy streets of London” and explores a “different life in Luther experience.”

“We’re really peeling back the onion here because we had the time and scope to do it,” Elba said. “So does Neil [Cross] much more you know Luther-country to play with, relative to where Luther can walk, how he walks, what the scenery is. We break out of the dirty streets of London, we take it outside a bit and it’s amazing. It feels like we are now entering another life Luther experience.”

Despite moving from television to the big screen, Elba said that Luther the film will retain the darker tones that the TV series is known for.

“It’s really dangerous when you expand from television to film, to throw a lot of money at it, and for that moment to change the characteristics of the show,” Elba said. “I wanted to make sure that even though we had a bigger budget, [we didn’t] distort the parameters of Luther– lands too much. We intensify the action and intensify the efforts. But [Season 3’s] man-under-the-bed moment? It doesn’t cost you much money. Those moments are still intact.”
