According to DeadlineLionsgate is currently producing a remake of the popular 2008 psychological horror film The strangers. Riverdale star Madeline Petsch, Froy Gutierrez (Teen Wolf), and Gabriel Basso (Hillbilly Elegy) has been cast as the lead in the upcoming home invasion remake, which has just started production in Slovakia.
The story revolves around Petsch’s unnamed character, who will go on a cross-country trip with her longtime boyfriend (Gutierrez) to start a new life in the Pacific Northwest. “When their car breaks down in Venus, Oregon, they are forced to spend the night at a secluded Airbnb, where they are terrorized from dusk to dawn by three masked strangers,” reads the synopsis.
The strangers the remake is directed by Renny Harlin, who will also helm two more planned sequels. It was co-authored by Alan R. Cohen and Alan Freedland.
“My mother instilled in me a love of film through the Hitchcocks and other masters of suspense and horror,” Harlin said in a statement. “My breakthrough to Hollywood happened with the success of A Nightmare on Elm Street 4. It’s only fitting that I return to my favorite genre with the incredibly well-written trilogy about The strangers. The characters and story are all grounded in reality and offer me an endless tapestry of spooky images to bring these films to life.”
The producers are Courtney Solomon, Mark Canton, Christopher Milburn, Gary Raskin, Charlie Dombeck, Alastair Birlingham, Frame Film SK, Johanna Harlin, Juan Garcia Peredo and Alberto Burgueno. It is executive produced by Andrei Boncea, Dorothy Canton and Roy Lee.
