According to Variety, Golden Globe nominee Ellen Pompeo has officially signed on to star in Hulu’s upcoming untitled Orphaned– inspired limited series, based on the true story of Ukrainian-born Natalia Grace and her adoptive parents. This marks Pompeo’s first major television project outside of the long-running grey’s Anatomywhere she has played the role of Meredith Gray for nearly two decades and eighteen seasons.
It has also been confirmed that her role in the upcoming nineteenth season of the ABC medical drama will be reduced. The outlet confirms that Pompeo will only appear in eight episodes, but will still narrate and executive produce the entire season.
The one without title Orphaned miniseries will center on a Midwestern couple who adopt what they believe is an 8-year-old girl with a rare form of dwarfism. “As they begin to raise her with their three biological children, they slowly begin to believe that she may not be who she says she is,” reads the synopsis. “They begin to question her story, which causes them to be confronted with their own difficult questions about how far they are willing to go to defend themselves, falling into a battle that is in the tabloids, the courtroom and ultimately their marriage.”
The project will be written and executive produced by Katie Robbins, with Erin Levy serving as executive producer and showrunner. Pompeo and Laura Holstein will produce through their Calamity Jane banner alongside Mike Epps, Dan Spilo, Niles Kirchner and Andrew Stearn. It is an ABC Signature production.
