The Penguin: Colin Farrell Says Matt Reeves Won’t Direct HBO Max Show

It’s been over four months since the official confirmation of HBO Max’s The penguin series, and now lead star Colin Farrell has finally opened up about the project’s current progress. talking with Entertainment tonightFarrell revealed that executive producer Matt Reeves is still working on writing the script while also carefully planning Batman the overall story structure of the spin-off series.

The Golden Globe-winning actor also confirmed that Reeves will not be taking on any directing duties for The penguinbut is instead heavily involved in the selection of who will direct the upcoming DC series.

“Matt’s up to his antics, you know, hovering over the keyboard and just plotting the story because he’s just so meticulous,” Farrell teased. “He’s so obsessed with what he’s doing, but he’s over it [HBO Max’s] The penguin [series] as well. I mean, he’s not going to direct it, but he’s all over the structure of the scripts and who’s going to direct them. And then it’s exciting.”

Set in the world of 2022 Batman, the HBO Max series will focus on Oswald Cobblepot’s past, showing his rise to power in Gotham’s seedy underbelly rather than portraying him as the established king. The character has a rich history of live-action appearances, as Danny DeVito famously played the Penguin in Batman returns and Robin Lord Taylor portrayed him in Gotham.

The limited drama will be based on the DC characters created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger. It will be written by Lauren LeFrance, who is also set as showrunner.

The coming The penguin the series will be executive produced by Batman‘s Dylan Clark and Matt Reeves, Farrell, LeFranc, Daniel Pipski, Adam Kassanand and Rafi Crohn. It is a joint project between 6th and Idaho, DC Entertainment, Dylan Clark Productions and Warner Bros. Television.
