The simple joys of living in an efficient climate-controlled home | Knowledge and joy

It’s been a few months since a Resideo technician installed our new one Honeywell Home T10 Pro Smart Thermostat with Redlink® Room Sensor in our home and you can see the difference. The house feels more comfortable, there is less drastic temperature change between rooms, and best of all, there has been a difference in our monthly heating and cooling bills.

A quick recap for you: Our 1950’s house is incredibly inefficient when it comes to heating, cooling and overall temperature control. Due to the layout of the house, some rooms get sun all day and become warm, while others stay downright cold. After living with these temperature fluctuations for the past two years, we had to solve this problem. (Read more about the subject here.)

Part of the motivation is our current spending freeze. I had gone through all of our expenses with a fine-toothed comb, looking for places where we could cut back (or eliminate expenses altogether). This house is a project home, but I had no idea how much utilities would cost when we moved. Minnesota temperatures can swing 100 degrees throughout the year, so we need to be as efficient as possible.

There had to be a more efficient way to make the home comfortable without spending a lot of money (namely replacing both of our furnaces). I love a good challenge and in this case I was determined to lower our energy bill.

I was extra excited about the Honeywell Homes T10 Pro Smart Thermostat with Redlink® Room Sensor because it connected to our smart home hubs. I’m all about making smart home upgrades whenever you can to make your house more efficient.

Here are a few other things I noticed after switching to the Honeywell Home T10 Pro Smart Thermostat with Redlink® Room Sensor:

I can adjust the temperature in certain rooms.

Before: South Side – HOT all day long; North side – Cold

After: With the Honeywell Home T10 Pro Smart Thermostat with Redlink® Room Sensor I can control the temperature in SPECIFIC rooms. Yes. It can be 69 in the family room and 71 in the peach room. In addition, the Honeywell Home T10 Pro Smart Thermostat with Redlink® Room Sensor can sense movement if a person is in the room and adjust accordingly.

I can adjust the temperature anywhere.

Before: Adjusting the temperature was done manually via the rotary knob. No programming function or remote control functions.

After: I can set the temperature from my phone. I can program, heat/cool, turn on/off and adjust all settings on the fly.

I am receiving temperature alerts.

Before: Nothing. It was always a surprise (an unpleasant one) when the bill came each month.

After: I can receive a notification if the temperature changes in some room and make rational decisions in the moment vs. promised to keep the house at 64 in winter and 80 in summer to save money.

I can’t recommend enough to do “smart” upgrades when you can. Products with apps and connections to smart home hubs such as Honeywell Home T10 Pro Smart Thermostat with Redlink® Room Sensor has made a difference in the comfort of our house and our energy bill.

Oh! If you have a basement that is prone to leaks, I highly recommend the Resideo WiFi Water Leak Detector. A few months ago we experienced a rather large storm. Literally, the smallest pool of water (about the size of a spilled glass of water) was enough to trigger the sensor and send an alert to my phone. It’s nice to fix the problem right away instead of being surprised by a flooded basement the next day.
