My morning routine
How Scarlett Johansson clears her skin in under 3 minutes
SCARLETT JOHANSSON | actress, producer and co-founder of The Outset
With two young children, one of the biggest careers in Hollywood and a burgeoning clean skin care brand, Scarlett Johansson finds her weekday mornings pretty stacked. Still, she builds in time for fun. “My favorite thing to do in the morning is tucking everyone into bed, including our dog, Pancake, who is usually broken by a leg or foot,” she says. However, she is waiting for the weekends to focus more intensely on the good things. “My husband [Colin Jost] and I work a lot and our kids are busy too, so having time on Sunday mornings to just enjoy each other and laugh and catch up is a gift we all really appreciate,” she says. “Sometimes I force us all to watch classic movies, e.g Easter parade. My daughter complains during the opening credits – what kid wouldn’t? – but she is quickly swept up in the magic of the golden age. Sharing movies with her as she gets older is one of my greatest joys.” That and pancakes: “If it’s the weekend, I make pancakes. Or we go to breakfast as a family and order pancakes.” Below, how she navigates even the most challenging weekday morning.

Wake up to my iPhone alarm, which is usually set too loud and freaks me out. I’d invest in one of those gradually calming alarm clocks that wake you up with a glowing light, but I wouldn’t sleep through the night because I’d be paranoid that it wouldn’t wake me up. As soon as I’m up, I check my phone. Unfortunately.

I timed my morning skin routine with my Outset products and it’s 2 minutes and 45 seconds. How’s that for efficiency? I follow the three-step regimen: our Gentle Micellar Antioxidant Cleanser and Firming Vegan Collagen Prep Serum, and I finish with the Nourishing Squalane Daily Moisturizer. I wash and moisturize my face day and night (and sometimes more) with these three. I only use Outset products for my skin (really!) and I usually try new products that we develop. I recently added ours Boost oil as part of my daily regimen because my skin is so dry in the winter that it cracks and peels. It is the oil that keeps on giving. My husband uses it for his cuticles. And I use it in my hair too.

Teeth brushed and sweatsuit on, I wake my daughter to get ready for school. I hate getting up early for the bus, but I love helping my daughter get ready for school. Looking after my children gives me great joy. I know one day she won’t want me to do her pigtails, so I try to enjoy every brushstroke while she’s still interested. And I make sure she eats something before we drag it to the bus.

Bus pick-up completed: a huge win in the parent department.
7:30
Back to the house to wait for my son to wake up. Colin and I use this as time to make coffee for each other.
8:30
My son wakes up for breakfast. Sweetness overload occurs. Colin and I love to sit with the baby and drink coffee and read books and talk.

Being physically active is part of my mental well-being: I work out four days a week when I’m not shooting. (When I’m shooting, I work out every weekday at 6 a.m., so late-morning workouts are a luxury.) I either go to meet my trainer, Eric Johnson, for circuit training or to Pilates. Finding Pilates a few years ago was a game changer for my mind and body. What I love about it is that when you do it, you really can’t think about anything else but what’s going on with your body. It is not a passive exercise. Being present in the moment is difficult for me, although as I get older I find it easier to access that space.
11:00
Time for a quick shower. I’ve been loving the GOOPGLOW Microderm Exfoliating Body Wash – it turns my shower into a spa.
Then I do a five-minute makeup routine to help me get out the door. I’ve been using our Ultralight Boosting Oil to thin out my foundation. I love Gucci Westman’s Vital Skin Foundation Stick for its clean formulation and even coverage. I use Tower 28 MakeWave’s mascara; it gives great volume, but it’s not cake. I also love the lip gel in Wild.

Since I’ve only had coffee before training, I eat lunch afterwards. I am not strict with my diet. I’ll have a breakfast wrap with eggs or a tuna sandwich. I wish I hated bagels, but I don’t.
12.00
Either I’m in the office for The Outset or These Pictures [Johansson’s production company] or I’m on a Zoom call for one or the other. I have a love-hate relationship with working from home, but ultimately being in the office physically is when I feel most productive. It’s also when The Outset team educates me on all things TikTok and I can finally steal a bunch of products for my bathroom as I’m always running low, especially our serum which I’m totally addicted to .
