The best non-toxic detergents for sensitive skin and sustainable washing

In the pursuit of a toxin-free household, the hunt for the best non-toxic detergents is typically not a top priority. Especially with things like cleaning products or cookware (thanks, Teflon) takes most of the limelight when it comes to everyday things that can accidentally poison us. (Dramatic, though right!)

Unfortunately, however, some of the top rated detergents have artificial fragrances, enzymes and chemicals that can irritate the skin and trigger allergic reactions – not to mention the damage they can do to the environment. Even my beloved Method cause for concern.

Detergents also do their work behind closed doors – aside from throwing in a pod or tipping a capful of the sticky stuff into a washing machine, it feels like you’re barely interacting with it all. Of course, you do interact for hours with your clothes, which may continue to carry the hidden chemicals when washed with less than desirable detergents.

To cut through the greenwashing noise, we used The Environmental Working Group A to F ranking system as our guide to rounding up the 10 best non-toxic laundry detergents – that still go hard against odors and stains. From pods, powders and pastes to sexy new brands that really hit the mark, there’s a safe, hassle-free detergent for every wash style.
