The Emmys aired last night, and while I’m not a huge fan of the awards show itself, I’ll always show up for a plus size bombshell slaying the red carpet; or in this case I should say the golden carpet! Last night, as I watched fashion and styling pour onto my timeline and across my TV screen for the 74th Emmys, I was so excited.
When it comes to major fashion events and red carpets, plus size people and style are ALWAYS few and far between or just never represented at all. There are so many gaps, limitations and completeness discrimination in plus size fashion that I can’t even begin to mention.
Every time a major red carpet event takes place, I’m reminded how rare it is to see a plus size figure wearing high fashion and off the runway. When I was younger I wondered if fat women were even invited to big red carpet events! (I know, sounds crazy.)
So when I see the plus size girls with different body types, show up at awards shows and in these rooms I give them their due because I know what went into putting this look together and bringing their visions to life. Seeing plus size fashion on the red carpet deserves a moment and we give it!
Plus Size Fashion on the red carpet– Emmy’s Edition
Tulle, tulle and more tulle! The first look that caught my eye was of course the boisterous and beautiful pop star and 6x Emmy nominee (and win!), Lizzo. She wore a high bun with an extravagant red ruffled dress and Lorraine Schwartz jewelry.
Nicole Byer showed up wearing royal blue like the royal goddess that she is. She also made a statement in a dark blue silk crop top that provides a midriff and pants combo. Who doesn’t love seeing some plus size abs and midriff on the red carpet!? I know I do.
Nicole paired the fit with beautiful ombre blonde naturally dyed hair in an African Fulani style.
Natasha Rothwell stuns in a satin ruby flowy gown with puffed sleeves that shows off a bit of cleavage in custom Safiyaa with jewelry by Angara and Lang Antiques. Her sleeves added the perfect essence to her smile and natural hairstyle, including a top bun with a swooped bang.
Melanie Lynskey appeared in one Christian Siriano original; a mint green off the shoulder number with frills and a bit of tulle at the bottom. I always love anything made by Christian Siriano. Melanie even spoke on the red carpet about how important the dress was to her and that she was happy to wear something that made her feel good.
Ashley Nicole Black
Ashley Nicole Black doesn’t just impress us on screen either “A Black Lady Sketch Show” and her writing in “Ted Lasso,” but she also impresses on the gold carpet in a black dress with matching gloves! The mesh/sheer bottom half of the dress gives it just enough sexiness, while her silver clutch and low bun bring the classic Hollywood look together.
We need more Plus Size Fashion on the Red Carpet!
It is important to see this because while there is plus size designers and plus size stylists In advance, there are still quite a few designers and stylists who refuse to style or work with stars above a size 8/10. So yes, I want to celebrate these looks and moments because it’s 2022 and unfortunately it’s still considered groundbreaking.
AND, plus size people deserve to see themselves pampered and show-stopping on the Emmy’s carpet and anywhere high fashion is welcome and the norm.
The plus size girls who showcased plus size fashion on the red carpet won last night. That is it. That’s all.
