Dakota Johnson just took denim-on-denim to new heights. On Jan. 19, the “Persuasion” actor arrived at the opening night of the Sundance Film Festival to honor Luca Guadagnino with the International Icon Award, dressed in an all-dark outfit. Her Magda Butrym look featured a structured bustier with a plunging neckline, a double-breasted denim trench coat and highwaisted pants with a wide-legged silhouette.

To accessorize her Americana-inspired pieces, Johnson kept it classic with a simple gold and diamond pendant Jessica McCormack, as well as black heels, her pointed toes peeking out from under the hem of her trousers. Upon closer inspection, the gold in her jewelry actually matched the rose-shaped buttons on her coat.

Denim-on-denim is a trend typically associated with the 80s, though it took off well into the 1990s and early 2000s, with pop culture icons such as Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake contributing to its polarizing reputation. But the full denim look was originally considered punk rock, championed by legends like Debbie Harry, Elvis and even Bing Crosby, whose Canadian tuxedo famously got him refused entry from a hotel in the 50s.

Now, double (or in this case, triple) denim seems to be in its prime, with Megan Fox recently wearing one jean corsetand “Emily in Paris“star Camille Razat is doing one all denim outfit look very chic. Look ahead for how Johnson styled her version.
