Chanel makes mini skirts the Haute Couture way

Spring 2023 haute couture shows have been heavily inspired by animals, myths and surrealism. Chanel takes a more subtle approach than e.g. Schiaparelli‘s faux taxidermywith its latest collection of Virginia Viard.

Among large plywood animal sculptures by French artist Xavier Veilhan inspired by those once displayed in Coco Chanel’s apartment, models appeared in new riffs on the tweed sets, pin-tucked blouses, coats and capes the house is known for. A few looks – such as a high-necked, double-breasted jacket with a flared waist and an array of top hats and bow ties – recall the wardrobe of a high-fashion ringleader, to fit the mythic bestiary theme. But the main takeaway from the Spring 2023 collection is Chanel’s endorsement of mini skirt.
