Welcome to the Black Leather Jacket Parade

“A black leather jacket isn’t a personality,” a naysayer might tell you—and yet it’s still one of the only items of clothing that ever comes close. And if there’s any place where that’s the case more often than not, it’s New York City.

Just ask the leather-clad celebrities living the dream there this week: Daniel Radcliffe wore a slim Prada bomber jacket with rib-knit cuffs – it just lends a kiss of indie sleaze – to the premiere of Weird: The Al Yankovic Story in New York City and elevated his otherwise very simple outfit of a black T-shirt and black jeans to a perfectly appropriate evening look. Winston Duke went a bit more high-octane for a recent NYC showing Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in a heavy job John Varvatos trench it is technically a deep shade of navy called “cadet blue”…but the black turtleneck and round wire-frame shades still grounded it in this theme. And then there’s Katie Holmes, an incredible dresser whose Khaite calfskin shirtpants set makes it possible to invest in not only a sturdy leather button-down, but also perhaps a pair of matching trousers. All are outfits that stay outfits thanks to a single very cool coat.

A black leather jacket will always make a bit of a statement—but don’t let that scare you. Just remember, now that we’re deep into the shoulder season, when the temperatures cool, your social calendar piles up, and you need something to wear to that thing. So of course, while a black leather jacket isn’t exactly a personality, it can definitely make an outfit. Here is your sign.
