Vanessa Hudgens is the latest celebrity to embrace Barbiecore. The actor posted on Instagram wearing a pink petticoat, and even captioned the post “Bad Barbie’s.” The 90s-inspired, mini style features an oversized floral print and thin straps for a retro feel. Posing next to two friends, Hudgens paired the petticoat with black platform flip flops, pink heart-shaped sunglasses and even sported a pink scrunchie in her hair. She accessorized with a pearl necklace, hoop earrings and an anklet.
Hudgens joins a number of celebrities who have recently popularized the fashion trend. While Y2K trends has been very much in style, Barbiecore takes the kitschy aesthetic one step further. This doesn’t just refer to the bubblegum pink red carpet look we’ve seen from e.g. Maison Valentino and Miu Miu but also more specifically the colorful texture combinations built on the conventional features and characteristics of Mattel’s quintessential American fashion doll. Barbie – brought to life in 1959 by Ruth Handler in a strapless, black-and-white-striped bathing suit, tiny gold rings and black heels – is today most synonymous with a look that looks more like Reese Witherspoon as Elle Woods in “Legally blonde.”
This summer, Barbiecore encourages us to embrace that same sense of fearlessness and capitalize on over-accessorized, monochromatic style with Hailey Bieber, Cardi B, Lizzo, Kim Kardashian, and Dua Lipa takes the reins. From Cardi’s head-to-toe Chanel outfit and Lizzo’s Valentino skater dress and opera gloves to Kardashian and Lipa decked out in Balenciaga, inspiration is readily available from celebrity Instagrams. While it’s key to pile on lots of pink, cool, statement accessories like towering platform heelsretro-shaped glasses and gloves are not to be overlooked.
We can partly attribute the excitement building around this aesthetic to Greta Gerwig’s long-awaited “Barbie” moviewith Margot Robbie and a platinum blonde Ryan Gosling. And even though the movie won’t be released until July 21, 2023, Barbiecore is already in full swing and the movie still does it justice.
Ahead, we’ve rounded up some of our favorite Barbiecore celebrities to date.
