We’re three weeks into 2023 and awards season is suddenly here everywhere and all at once. The 2023 Critics’ Choice Awards took place in Los Angeles on Sunday, just five days after the Golden Globes kicked off the annual red carpet on Tuesday, and the attendees who didn’t. tested positive for COVID here a Cold Stone Creamery brand step-and-repeat.
And if Globes was the first vibe check for menswear of the yearthen the Critics’ Choice was about the rebound cases.
We’re still seeing plenty of suits in just about any color other than black: Seth Rogen and Jeremy Allen White took up the mantle from Jeremy Strong Book of Brown, Brian Tyree Henry and Johnny Knoxville (!) painted full ice, and Tyler James Williams and Andrew Garfield chose unconventional neutrals. There was a near absence of standard ties, with many opting for smart bows or the ever-common “air tie”. For every set of lace-up Oxfords that were made to stay at home, there was a pair of loafers ready to take their place.
There were also some key actual awards-season takeaways from the show: Everything everywhere at once took home a trophy for Best Picture and so did its star, Ke Huy Quanwho won Best Supporting Actor while wearing a superb burgundy velvet Armani jacket; Brendan Fraser gave a huge speech after winning Best Actor for his performance in Darren Aronofsky’s The whale:”I was in the desert, and I probably should have left a trail of breadcrumbs, but you found me,” he told Aronofsky, before continuing, “If, like a guy like Charlie, who I played in this movie, you’re struggling in any way with obesity or you just feel like you are in a dark sea, I want you to know that if you too can have the strength to just get up and walk to the light. Good things will happen.”
But! For the look:
