Here are a few things to keep in mind when planning your next road trip:

Not all cars are created equal when it comes to road trips. You should consider things like fuel efficiency, comfort and storage space when choosing your trip.

Make sure your vehicle is in good condition. This means you need to tune-up before you go, check your oil and tire pressure and make sure all your lights are working. If you plan to drive something at night, it is also a good idea to bring some extra light sourcesas flares or reflective triangles.

Select your destination

If you feel adventurous, consider exploring a new state or country and consider taking some roadtrips in Baja or around Mexico. On the other hand, if you are looking for a more relaxed trip, stick to destinations that are closer to home. Once you have selected your destination, it is time to start mapping your route.

One of the very best things about road trips is that they allow you to take detours and explore off-the-beaten-path destinations. So while planning your route, be sure to make room for spontaneity. That way, if you see something interesting while driving, you can always stop and check it out.

Pack wisely

Overpacking is one of the biggest mistakes people make on road trips. Remember, you are going to spend a lot of time in your car, so you want to pack light.

Be sure to pack only the essentials, such as toiletries, clothing, a first aid kit and snacks, all must-haves for any road trip.

You will need a good map (or maps) of the area you are going to travel in. Depending on where you are going and how well you know the area, you may also want to invest in a GPS system. Even if you have no plans to drive off-road, it is always good to have a physical card as backup – technology can fail.

If you need to spend some time camping or hiking, pack some extra equipment. And if you travel with children, make sure you have plenty of activities to keep them entertained – books, games, toys, etc.

Be prepared for emergencies

No one likes to think about crashes or accidents, but it is important to be prepared for anything. So be sure to pack a first aid kit, some basic tools and a spare tire. And of course, do not forget your insurance information!

ONE first aid kit is always a good idea, as well as sunscreen and insect repellent (depending on the season and location). And it’s always convenient to have a few snacks and drinks in the car for those times when you get hungry or thirsty but can’t stop for a break.

Once you have packed your car and planned your route, it’s time to take the road. One of the best parts of road trips is the ability to slow down and really enjoy the journey.

So be sure to spend some time enjoying the scenery, listening to some great music and creating some great memories with your travel companions.

Driving can be stressful, so make sure to take breaks often – Pull over when you feel tired and stretch your legs. And if you start to get bored, find a fun radio station or hop into a good audiobook.
