During the event, attendees will be entertained by “yours truly” as Microsoft pilot Chris Levesque takes you through sets of live-streamed flight simulation experiences on the state-of-the-art Microsoft Flight Simulator. The flight simulations are actual GPS satellite images.

Participants participating in the Orbis Flight for Sight event will also take a virtual tour of the Orbis Flying Eye Hospital. This is an amazing plane that flies around the world helping those in need. FedEx donated a cargo plane that was converted into a state-of-the-art teaching and training eye hospital.

Nearly 1 billion people worldwide live with vision loss or blindness that could be prevented or treated if they had access to the care we so easily take for granted. Your participation will help end avoidable blindness for those living in low and middle income countries where eye care does not exist.

Flying Eye Hospital

orbis flying eye hospital

The Orbis Flying Eye Hospital was made possible by event sponsor FedEx, who donated this unique aircraft and transformed it into a state-of-the-art teaching and training eye hospital.

The flying eye hospital travels to half a dozen destinations each year equipped with a full medical team from more than 30 countries. Doctors, nurse anesthetists and biomedical engineers volunteer their time to share their expertise with local doctors.

The aim of the flying eye hospital is threefold. To help treat eye problems that could be easily cured if only people had access to doctors, raise awareness of eye health in local authorities and train local doctors.

Unfortunately, 90% of the 1 billion people living with preventable eye disease live in low- and middle-income countries. That’s where the flying eye hospital becomes so important. Not only do the volunteer staff treat eye diseases, but they also create opportunities, simulation training and sharing expertise with local doctors.

Orbis Flying Eye Hospital also raises awareness of eye health in low- and middle-income countries and opens dialogue with local governments and ministries of health to help change global eye health policies and priorities.
